Frisk #178

Snakes alive, it’s Frisk #178! The 178th Street Tunnel in Manhattan was constructed in 1940, although by the 1950s it was overwhelmed by traffic – too narrow, too poorly ventilated – and was superseded by the Trans-Manhattan Expressway. Nowadays it’s boarded up either end and used by the Port Authority for storage. So it’s basically just a big secret hole in the ground full of old road signs and Armco. There you go, a pointless fact.

Frisk #177

Blow the doors off, it’s Frisk #177! This is a very versatile number – it’s the second-highest score achievable with three darts on a regular dartboard, the phone number for the police in Morocco, the smallest available calibre of airgun pellets, an ultra-premium limited edition Aston Martin, a little Cessna from the 1970s, the bus route from Peckham to Thamesmead, the year Marcus Aurelius began the systematic persecution of Christians in Rome, and the atomic number of the appropriately-named unseptseptium. Phew.

Frisk #176

Shut the front door, it’s Frisk #176! 176 is a ‘cake number’; that is, the maximum number of regions into which a 3-dimensional cube can be partitioned by exactly n planes. For example, the 5th cake number is 15 – you could cut a cube into fifteen slices with four cuts, fourteen of which have an external surface and one of which is a tetrahedron from the centre. Frisk #174

Jingle your bells, it’s Frisk #174! Back in the 1990s, 174 was the number you’d dial from your landline to test that it was working: dial 174, hang up, and then your phone would start ringing. This, to pre-internet teenagers, was an excellent prank to play on siblings and parents.
I’ve no idea if it still works. When was the last time you even used your landline…?

Frisk #173

Odds bodkins, it’s Frisk #173! In the study of integers, 173 is what’s known as an ‘odious number’ – a non-negative number with an odd number of 1s in its binary expression. If a number isn’t odious, it’s an ‘evil number’. Oh, mathematicians – you so crazy.

Toss the salad, it’s Frisk #172! Champion high-diver Dana Kunze holds the world record for diving from 172 feet up. That’s a really long way. His trunks caught fire when he re-entered the ionosphere. (Possibly.)
